O most surprising Lord, teach me your ways:

You make what is not, so.

You ask me to trust utterly in what I can’t see.

You teach me to pray “Keep me from temptation,” but you ask me to follow you into the scuffle of the world—where your work is, and where I’m most likely to face trials and tests.

You show me that real strength comes often disguised as utter dependence.

You ascended to heaven, yet you still walk with us on earth.

You promise us the gift of piety; yet, to be honest, God, true devotion and false religiosity so often look the same to me.

You promise that those who give up the self—who choose meekness, who are meek—will get everything in the end.

O surprising Lord, today I open myself to you, whose ways I cannot comprehend.

Amen.

Connecting This Path with the Next

If the week just completed evoked the “path of heaven on earth,” the seventh and final path tips the scales toward transcendence and eternity. We could describe it as “the path toward our eternal home.” New Testament writers tended to frame earthly trials and persecutions as mere preparation for something glorious. As Paul prays in 1 Thessalonians, “May he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.”
